Beginner Series (1 of 5) – Introduction To Wing Chun – Sil Lim Tao “Little Idea Form”
This is an introduction series of 5 videos breaking down the very first hand ‘pattern’ of the Wing Chun system. The first form is your Wing Chun ‘dictionary’. It has all the movements, techniques and positions of the system within it and ‘in theory’ encompasses the entire system. On closer inspection the 1st Form has many of Wing Chun’s ‘Secrets’ and practiced daily can greatly benefit your training, when done in addition to normal classes.
Health
In itself it is also greatly beneficial to health with the benefit of focusing your mind and body. It also helps stimulate blood flow with the stretches and creates greater suppleness of the hands and wrists with these exercises.
Basic Stance
The basic stance lowers your center of gravity, strengthens your legs and trains a ‘sinking’ mentality, giving you a stronger base from which to apply techniques and positions with the hands. Although there are no turns and steps in the first form, regular practice will give you a stronger ‘grounding’ and you will become used to sinking your body as a single unit. This will help later on when you learn turning and stepping techniques.
Lesson 1 – Opening The Stance
The first video is a basic drill for opening your basic stance – “yee gee kim yeun mar”, Character two, adduction stance. This lesson shows the basic bow and opening of the stance. Once you have opened the stance, sink as low as you can. You will get a new video each week. For best results train each video daily and you will have learned the full form ‘pattern’ by the end of the course. Use this week’s video to train your stance. Start by sitting in this stance for a few minutes or as long as you can. By extending the time each time you practice you can eventually sit in this stance for 10-20 minutes at a time.
You will learn how the positions from Siu Lim Tao fit into ‘chi sau’ (or sticky hands) during the normal classes.
