Can You Learn Wing Chun Online?
In an ideal world you would join a class with a well qualified Sifu who has spent at least 10 years learning from a Master of the art.
You would be able to play chi sau with instructors and other students and learn from their skills which have been built up over decades. But if you have limited availability of a good Wing Chun class nearby, online resources can help supplement your training in the mean time.
Even if you have a class, you can also benefit from online resources which compliment your training. However, don’t expect to learn a martial art well just from watching videos. You need real experience with other people who know what they’re doing!
How Can You Learn Wing Chun Online?
There are certain aspects of Wing Chun which you can learn by watching and copying videos. Without a Sifu to give you feedback this can be considerably more difficult to learn properly of course, and learning the practical applications and practicing them is another matter too.
The Wing Chun forms lend themselves quite well to distance learning. Forms are like textbooks and offer a visual “blueprint” of the Wing Chun system. They are a great place to start.
I opened a class in 2010 in Bradford, UK, and later I offered an online training aid to my students. This was a weekly video which explained the basic positions and moves in the first hand pattern (form) Siu Lim Tao.
It helped my students learn and keep motivated in training when they couldn’t make a class.
